Object Details

In 1912, presidential aspirant and Speaker Champ Clark adopted a folk tune from his home state of Missouri as a campaign anthem. Using spelling to convey the Ozark regional accent of the song’s origin, voters and pundits interpreted the lyrics as Clark's championing of the common man, or alternatively that the candidate himself lacked sophistication. In addition to sheet music, the song’s title appeared on campaign buttons and dog trinkets.
