This letter opener was used to open the sealed ballots from the Electoral College in the 2004 presidential election, part of a tradition in place since the mid-20th century. On January 6 at 1:00 pm, the Vice President opens the votes from each state in alphabetical order before a Joint Session of Congress, and passes the votes to four tellers—two from the House and two from the Senate—who announce the results.
