Artist Anton Sario was born Abram Isreaelson in Latvia in 1893. By the 1920s he was living and working in Mexico and best known for pastel portraits of Native Mexicans. Sario travelled extensively, “But, always,” he said, “I get sick for Mexico and must go back to her.” Sario’s fanciful pastel drawing of the Capitol shows an enormous hedge and expanse of lawn stretching from the base of the West Front. Although the landscape is invented, the wildlife is truthful. Squirrels have been commonplace on the Capitol grounds for generations.
