In 1793, George Washington, a member of the Freemasons, laid the cornerstone for the U.S. Capitol in a ceremony of Masonic pomp and circumstance. More than a century later, miniature versions of the trowel Washington used were part of 1910 fundraising efforts to build a Masonic monument to the first President.
