Object Details

Colorful and controversial Representative Bella Abzug added a bag-appropriate pun to her re-election campaign shopping bag—“Carry Bella back to Congress”—to her usual slogan, “This woman’s place is in the House.” Abzug embodied backlash against the political establishment during the Vietnam era, and was credited with being a House trailblazer for “creating a feminist presence” within the institution, according to one of her aides.
