The Pennsylvania Union Republicans included every last candidate for office on this ribbon—from governor to judges of orphans court. Members of Congress on the 1898 ticket were former Speaker Galusha Grow and Representative Samuel Davenport. Grow was nearing the end of his on-and-off congressional career. During the Civil War, he served as Speaker, and was known for adamant anti-slavery views. His hiatus from Congress was remarkably long—31 years passed between stints as a Representative.
