New York Representative Adam Clayton Powell and Hazel Scott held their newborn son in 1946. Scott, a brilliant pianist who mixed classical and jazz traditions, soon came under the gaze of the House Un-American Activities Committee. Denying claims of communist leanings, she voluntarily testified before the committee in 1950. “The actors, musicians, artists, composers, and all of the men and women of the arts are eager and anxious to help to serve. Our country needs us more today than ever before,” Scott told the committee. Despite her persuasive testimony, the accusations marred her career.
