Object Details
In the 1990s, Members were alerted to action in the House Chamber by bells controlled from this panel. They are part of a system that dates to 1890. Before the bell system came into use, bellowing Pages called Representatives to the Chamber. In the modern era, a similar panel controls buzzers and lights that emanate from clocks all around the House buildings in set sequences that indicate actions such as votes, quora, or even civil emergencies.
