Object Details
This wooden box is one of a pair that the House uses on the rare occasion when a Member calls for a “teller vote.” Each member fills out and signs a vote tally card and drops it in the slot on top. Why two boxes? One is supervised by the measure’s proponent and one by an opponent, dubbed “tellers” for the duration of the vote. In the days before electronic voting, this method was faster than a lengthy roll call vote, in which each Member’s name was called.
