At the turn of the 20th century, bentwood chairs served the same purpose as folding chairs in the modern era. They were cheap, lightweight and common in most buildings where large groups met. Photographs of the Capitol show them in committee rooms, restaurants, and hallways. This battered example is one of the few that survived into the 21st century.
