John Wanamaker and Company made hundreds of these desk chairs for the House’s first office building, completed in 1908. The House called for furniture that was modern and practical, yet attuned to the stately nature of the Congress, with all carving done by hand, “executed with spirit and care and left so as to show the tool marks.”
