Revenge was sweet, indeed, for Democrat “Champ” Clark of Missouri, whose role in toppling autocratic Republican Speaker Joe Cannon led to Clark’s ascension to the Speaker’s chair. Artist Edward Kemble depicted Clark pointedly ignoring the former Speaker’s reduced presence in the House.
