Pages, originally boys as young as 8, began working as messengers for the House in the 1810s. On duty whenever the House was at work, the Pages seen here rested during a 15-hour marathon session in the 1950s. After attending school from 6:30 until 9:30 in the mornings, Pages went to the Capitol to complete their daily tasks. The combination of school and this lengthy legislative day lasting until 3 a.m. made for weary Pages.
