The House introduced electronic voting in the chamber in 1973. A dozen years later, this second-generation voting station added colored buttons to help Representatives quickly differentiate votes of “yea,” “nay,” or “present.” A fourth light indicated that a vote was underway and that the Member could insert a voting card into the slot to the right.
