Object Details

In the 1950s, the House’s Official Reporters used this stenotype machine to record and transcribe verbatim reports of congressional proceedings and meetings. Working at a fast pace, so as not to miss a moment, official reporters ended long hearings surrounded by heaps of steno paper at their feet. In the 21st century, stenography used different technologies, with real-time translations, digital screens, and no paper piles.
