Tourists flocked to the Capitol in the 19th century, and some, including this woman, left with a photograph taken at Freeman Thorp’s studio tucked up on the fourth floor of the Capitol building. It is not clear how Thorp secured the space, but he used it to advantage, taking commissions for portraits from the Senate and the House.
