The sitter for this photograph is unknown, but the real revelation is on the back of the cabinet card. It reads “F. Thorp, Capitol Building, Washington, D.C.” Freeman Thorp, a popular artist, managed to secure a studio in the Capitol itself. He called it his “atelier,” and from there he churned out photographs for visitors, beginning in 1871 until about 1878.
