The House honored Appropriations Chairman Daniel Anthony for his service with a large photograph rather than a formal oil painting. Like many other portrait photographs, this one was hand-tinted. The photographic portion bleached over time, leaving the applied color standing out in starker contrast. Anthony himself did not fade into the legislative woodwork. A nephew of legendary women’s rights activist Susan B. Anthony, he introduced an Equal Rights Amendment in Congress for the first time, in 1923.
