When the Rayburn House Office Building opened in 1965, the spaces were so vast that even the three-level underground parking garage had multiple lobbies. This sign for Lobby No. 1 originally helped wandering Representatives find their way through the labyrinthine building. The New York Times reported that members Pete Frelinghuysen of New Jersey and Silvio Conte of Massachusetts admitted to losing their way en route to the Capitol through the extensive corridors.
