With decades of service in Congress under his belt, Joe Cannon seemed like family to his voters and colleagues. This 1908 ribbon badge needed only his nickname, Uncle Joe, to identify the Speaker of the House. A medal with a ribbon like this was, by this date, a rather fancy campaign promotion. Cheaper celluloid buttons were more common after the turn of the 20th century.
