Whenever Congress goes out of session, legions of workers descend on the Capitol for maintenance and repairs. This scene was captured during the 1948 August recess. The Chamber’s ceiling required supports—visible on the right—because of the failing 19th-century roof. While that repair was still in process, crews cleaned and refreshed the walls of the Visitor’s Gallery. The full renovation was completed two years later, in 1950.
