The Republican and Democratic Cloakrooms, located at the rear of the House Chamber, provide space to relax, make phone calls, or have a bite to eat. Ledgers, such as this example used from 1978 until 1980 in the Republican Cloakroom, also helped Representatives stay up-to-date on votes, leadership opinions, and other announcements. In line-by-line notes, the ledger documented the issues of the day, from items of immediate concern, like debt limit extension votes, to ideas that would become increasingly important in the future, like the “new electronic mail system” about to be rolled out.
