When House carpenters used this time book to log their work hours, they were responsible for the furnishings needed for 435 Representatives, several nonvoting Members, nearly 20 committees, and House staff. All that building, refinishing, and maintaining kept the skilled craftsmen busy throughout the year, especially during recess periods when the House was not in session, as seen in these logs.
