As the war in Europe intensified, the U.S. Capitol Police took extra care with admitting the public—tourists shown in this 1940 photo state their business to an officer on duty. Established in 1828, the Capitol Police’s mission from the start included keeping its jurisdiction both secure and accessible to visitors.
