Ettie Garner served as chief advisor to her husband, Speaker John Nance Garner, throughout his long career. Reporters, however, posed her at a camp stove, in front of pots of chili and coffee. The Garners often ate in her office, and reporters knew to find her there. “She moved into a little first-floor hide-out, no name on the door,” one journalist later reminisced. “There I went to see her almost every day, often taking a quaff from her ever-bubbling coffee percolator.”
