Gregorio Camacho Sablan became the first Delegate from the Northern Mariana Islands in 2009. This nameplate from the chamber voting boards was part of the institution’s electronic voting system. The technology, first installed in 1973, consisted of thin plastic nameplates, installed in a grid high on the House Chamber’s southern wall and lit from behind. During a vote, Members could quickly confirm their electronic “yea” or “nay” by glancing up to see whether a green or red light glowed beside the nameplate. In 2010, the House replaced the old system after almost 40 years of use.
