Object Details

Stereoviews were popular 19th-century souvenirs, available to tourists and armchair travelers alike. This example, showing Revolutionary War hero Ethan Allen’s statue in the Capitol, might have been purchased as part of a set offered by a door-to-door salesman, or even from the kiosk in the background of this photograph. In the 1880s, merchants sold newspapers, mementos, and snacks in stands tucked into every nook and cranny of the busy building.
