Object Details
William Samuel Johnson was a Member of the Continental Congress and a signer of the U.S. Constitution. In 1937, William Samuel Johnson’s descendant, artist Mary (Maude) Craven Johnson, painted this copy of a Gilbert Stuart portrait and presented it to the Continental Congress’s own descendent, the House of Representatives. When Johnson sat for the original portrait, he wore the scarlet robes of Oxford University, which granted him an honorary doctorate of law degree.
