“Girl reporter on the search for scandal gets the surprise of her life!” Newshound Alice Kingsley may have found Representative Joe Gresham surprising, but the audience for the fictional movie Washington Story could easily predict that she and the Congressman would find true love by the last scene. Reviews at the time pointed out the surprisingly positive depiction of the upright Congressman, given what the New York Times called “the dubious service that has been done to Hollywood by the House Committee on Un-American Activities.”
