The oldest surviving furniture associated with the Speaker of the House is a quartet of chairs, of which this is one. They were purchased for the Speaker’s Office in 1857. The Renaissance Revival–inspired carvings of these chairs gave a sense of solidity and complemented the similar styles of the elaborate chairs designed for the nearby Chamber.
