The U.S. Capitol long took its aesthetic cues from ancient architecture. In the 1960s, even umbrella stands got the Greek and Roman treatment. This example was likely made when the East Front of the building expanded to add 90 new rooms, in 1958–1962. It has a finish of weathered bronze and contrasting bands of stylized leaves at the top and bottom. Handles that look vaguely Roman finish off the stand and provided a quick way to move them around the building.
