Maryland Representative Carlton Ralph Sickles was instrumental in the creation of a mass transit system around Washington, D.C. When the new Orange line of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, familiarly known as the Metro, opened in 1978, Sickles drove from his home to the nearby New Carrollton station. “I always thought they should have named it the New Carlton Station, but they refused,” he joked.
