Lawrence McDonald, a Representative from Georgia, was a forceful critic of the Soviet Union during his service in the House. In 1983, as McDonald and 268 other civilians traveled to Seoul, South Korea, the Korean Airlines flight strayed into Russian airspace. A Soviet fighter plan shot the plane down, resulting in the death of all passengers.
