When Shirley Chisholm took her seat in the 91st Congress, she became the first African-American woman in Congress. She projected strength, confidence, and outspokenness, an image reflected in her campaign slogan: “Unbought and Unbossed.” During the campaign, as her truck crossed the newly reapportioned Bedford-Stuyvesant congressional district, her voice carried over the loudspeaker: “Ladies and Gentlemen . . . this is fighting Shirley Chisholm coming through.”
