At the start of the 73rd Congress, on March 9, 1933, Members chose the next Speaker of the House. Henry Thomas Rainey, an Illinois Representative who served as Majority Leader in the 72nd Congress, won the election with 302 votes. In this photograph, Rainey stands on the rostrum next to Bertrand Snell of New York, who received 110 votes. Representative Paul Kvale, a Farmer Laborite from Minnesota, also received five votes.
