Collection of the U.S. House of Representatives, Gift of Robert Aagre
Object Details
When teenaged Pages came to Washington, they often made their temporary homes in residences like Olive Smith’s house. Up to 16 boys could live in the 10 available rooms. With so many boarders, Mrs. Smith, seated at left, came up with inventive ways to remember and communicate with residents, including a complicated system of whistles based on room location and lodger seniority to alert Pages when their parents called.
