The 1936 death of House Speaker Joseph Byrns shocked his colleagues and stunned President Franklin D. Roosevelt. The President, seated at the end of the front row, attended Byrns’s funeral in the House Chamber. The tradition of funerals in the Chamber for some sitting Members, which started in 1820, ended soon afterward in 1940.
