Officials from the Architect of the Capitol, the Bureau of Standards, and the Otis Elevator Company inspected new Capitol elevators in 1934. After the first Capitol elevator was installed in the Senate wing in 1873, the House Appropriations Committee Chairman John DeWitt Clinton Atkins initially deemed a lift on the House side to be an unnecessary expenditure. But soon, multiple elevators were installed around the Capitol, maintained frequently, and replaced occasionally with safer models.
