In the 1870s, this armchair was one of hundreds bought for the Capitol. The style found popularity as office chairs in the 1800s. They were sturdy, but had a few simplified decorations that served as a nod to fashionable European styles. Today, this example is the last survivor in the Capitol, and shows the wear of a century and a half of hard work.
