When the first House Office Building opened in 1908, each office came with mahogany furniture from John Wanamaker & Co. of Philadelphia. This revolving coat tree was part of the standard suite, along with a roll top Member’s desk, and a variety of tables and chairs. The new building, with offices for each Member, changed the way Representatives worked, not least by providing workspace for staff.
