Illinois Representative Jessie Sumner yawned as she paid an early visit to a salon before a day of work in the House. For decades, women Members of Congress visited the House Beauty Shop in the basement of the Longworth Office Building. When the salon abruptly closed, Congresswoman Martha Griffiths spearheaded the creation of the House Select Committee on the Beauty Shop to revive it.
