Trade cards were used to advertise manufacturers’ wares in the 19th century. The Capitol was a popular subject for trade cards in America and in Europe. Schicht’s Soap was made in lands of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and included the House Chamber as one of the wonders of North America in cards for its popular Swan Soap (“one rub with Swan is worth three with ordinary soap”).
