This brass tobacco spittoon, used in the House Press Gallery, is one of the last examples of a time-honored piece of Capitol furniture. For generations, chewing tobacco was immensely popular in the House. Spittoons, a common sight in the Capitol from at least the 1830s, show up in images of every corner of the building. The tradition of placing them in offices and public spaces survived until the 1970s, long past chewing tobacco's heyday.
