Object Details

Thaddeus Stevens, lifelong opponent of slavery, died a hero in 1868. Prints like this one documented the journey of his remains from Washington to his home in Pennsylvania. The send-off at the railroad depot warranted a special train car, an African-American militia honor guard, and thousands of spectators. Newspapers reported Stevens’s death and funeral in graphic detail, noting that before the coffin was closed after two days in the Capitol Rotunda, “the features of the deceased have changed considerably since yesterday; the eyes and temple are very much sunken, and the face is of an almost saffron hue.”
