Object Details

Four women posed for the press on the day of President Coolidge’s annual message. They were the sum total of women in the House in 1927: Edith Nourse Rogers of Massachusetts, Florence Kahn of California, Katherine Langley of Kentucky, and Mary Norton of New Jersey. A fifth woman, Pearl Oldfield of Arkansas, joined them in 1928 after winning her deceased husband’s seat. Rogers, one of the longest-serving women in the House, would eventually see the ranks of congresswomen grow to 19 by the time she left the House in the 1960s.
