Eliza Jane Pratt was the first woman to represent a North Carolina district. She succeeded her boss, Congressman William O. Burgin, when he died in April 1946. Although her time as a Congresswoman lasted eight weeks, Pratt had a long-standing non-elected career in politics from 1924 to 1962.
