Object Details

The Capitol’s Rotunda hosted an unusual event in 1874. A massive tea party marked the 101st anniversary of the Boston Tea Party, a political protest and iconic event in the American Revolution. Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper noted that the fundraiser for the 1876 centennial celebrations of the Declaration of Independence, complete with tea tossed from a miniature ship, coupled with “the social standing of the ladies” made it a night to remember.
