Although she represented California only briefly, Mae Nolan’s tenure in the House was marked by milestones. The first woman to succeed her husband in Congress, Nolan’s example influenced many future widows of Members of Congress. She was also the first woman to represent California, and in serving as chairman for the House Committee on Expenditures in the Post Office, was the first woman to head a committee.
