Ruth Pratt began her political career as a New York City alderman, where her frequent budget clashes with the Democratic political organization Tammany Hall earned her the sobriquet “Watchdog of the Treasury.” In 1928 she became the first woman elected to represent New York in Congress. The first bill she introduced during her two terms sought to increase benefits for permanently disabled World War I veterans.
