On her 68th birthday, Alice Robertson of Oklahoma sat for a photographic portrait in her office. Robertson’s desk was awash in birthday greetings. While the caption for the photograph noted that many of the letters were from grateful World War I veterans she helped, that gratitude soon turned to ire. Robertson alienated them when she opposed a measure that would have allowed them to receive an early payment on their military service pensions.
